Orlando Associate Elizabeth Wood Wins Prestigious "Burton Award" for Excellence in Legal Achievement
ORLANDO, Fla.; April 27, 2009 —The statewide law firm Broad and Cassel is proud to recognize Orlando Associate Elizabeth Wood for earning a 2009 “Distinguished Writing Award” from the Burton Foundation through its prestigious “Burton Awards for Legal Achievement” program. Only 15 law school students in the nation were chosen for this honor.
Wood was recognized for her article entitled The Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act of 2006: A Violation of the Criminal Defendant's Sixth Amendment Rights to Confrontation and Compulsory Process, which she completed while attending Stetson University College of Law. Her entry was judged and selected by professors from Harvard Law School, University of Pennsylvania Law School, Michigan Law School, a judge, among others.
Wood will be recognized at the black tie gala to be held at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. June 15, 2009. Among the honorees and speakers at the tenth anniversary award reception are U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, author Bryan Garner, New York State Chief Judge Judith S. Kaye (retired), and renowned television screenwriter David E. Kelley. Vonda Shepherd of Ally McBeal will also perform that evening.
The “Burton Awards for Legal Achievement” program rewards major achievements in the law ranging from literary awards to the greatest reform in law. Applicants must have their entries submitted by a managing partner from one of the nation’s 1,000 largest law firms or by a law school dean on order to be accepted.
Wood, who is a member of the Firm’s Eminent Domain Practice Group, earned her Juris Doctor and Master of Business Administration from Stetson University, where she served as Assistant Editor of the Stetson Law Review. Wood also gained valuable experience as an intern for the Criminal Division of the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
